    Discovery of a faint, star-forming, multiply lensed, Lyman-alpha blob

    We report the discovery of a multiply lensed Lyman-α\alpha blob (LAB) behind the galaxy cluster AS1063 using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The background source is at z=z= 3.117 and is intrinsically faint compared to almost all previously reported LABs. We used our highly precise strong lensing model to reconstruct the source properties, and we find an intrinsic luminosity of LLyαL_{\rm Ly\alpha}=1.9×10421.9\times10^{42} erg s−1^{-1}, extending to 33 kpc. We find that the LAB is associated with a group of galaxies, and possibly a protocluster, in agreement with previous studies that find LABs in overdensities. In addition to Lyman-α\alpha (Lyα\alpha) emission, we find \ion{C}{IV}, \ion{He}{II}, and \ion{O}{III}] ultraviolet (UV) emission lines arising from the centre of the nebula. We used the compactness of these lines in combination with the line ratios to conclude that the \Lya nebula is likely powered by embedded star formation. Resonant scattering of the \Lya photons then produces the extended shape of the emission. Thanks to the combined power of MUSE and strong gravitational lensing, we are now able to probe the circumgalatic medium of sub-L∗L_{*} galaxies at z≈3z\approx 3.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures; moderate changes to match the accepted A&A versoi

    The frozen state in the liquid phase of side-chain liquid-crystal polymers

    International audienceQuenched isotropic melts of side-chain liquid-crystal polymers reveal surprisingly an anisotropic polymer conformation. This small-angle neutron-scattering (SANS) result is consistent with the identification of a macroscopic, solidlike response in the isotropic phase. Both experiments (rheology and SANS) indicate that the polymer system appears frozen on millimeter length scales and at the time scales of the observation. This result implies that the flow behavior is not the terminal behavior and that cross-links or entanglements are not a necessary condition to provide elasticity in melts

    International audienceIn the preceding Comment [1], Collin and Martinoty claim that a conventional flow behavior (G' ~ f2 , G'' ~ f) is obtained at 20 μ\mum gap thickness, for a LC-polymer (LCP105) in the nematic phase, using a filling with a capillary, whereas a solidlike behavior (G' ~ Cst, G" ~ Cst) is observed by approaching two parallel surfaces to the sample (as we apply in our experiment). Our observations of a terminal solidlike behavior are thus interpreted by Collin and Martinoty as an anomaly induced by compression effects. We clearly refute this interpretation. We note that, on Fig. 13 and 14 of a previous paper written by Collin and Martinoty [2], they report no more a conventional flow but an elastic behavior at lower temperature using the capillary filling and the same polymer (LCP105). Their previous observations are thus in contradiction with their present purpose; i.e., a terminal flow behavior

    The study of karstic aquifers by geodetic measurements in Bus de la Genziana station \u2013 Cansiglio Plateau (Northeastern Italy)

    We propose an interdisciplinary study of karstic aquifers using titlmeters and GPS observations. The study region is located in northeastern Italy, in the seismic area of the Cansiglio Playeau. The Zollner type Marussi tiltmeters are installed in a natural cavity (Bus del la Genziana) that is part of an interesting karstic area of particular hydrogeologic importance. The Livenza river forms from a number of springs at the foothills of the karstic massif and flows through the Friuli-Veneto plain into the Adriatic Sea. Comparing the tiltmeter signal recorded at the Genziana station with the local pluviometrical series and the hydrometric series of the Livenza river, a clear correlation is recognized. Moreover, the data of a permanent GPS station located on the southern slopes of the Cansiglio Massif (CANV) show also a clear correspondence with the water runoff. Here we present the hydrologic induced deformations as observed by tiltmeter and GPS. After heavy rain events we record rapid deformations both by tiltmeters and GPS corresponding to the rainfall duration. In the following days a slow geodetic motion recovers the accumulated deformation with a distinctive pattern both in tilt and GPS data, which correlates with the runoff of the karstic aquifer. The purpose of this research is to open a new multidisciplinary frontier between geodetic and karstic system studies to improve the knowledge of the underground fluid flow circulation in karstic areas. Furthermore a better characterization of the hydrologic effects on GPS and tilt observations will have the benefit that these signals can be corrected when the focus of the study is to recover the tectonic deformation

    A highly-ionized region surrounding SN Refsdal revealed by MUSE

    Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply-imaged, highly-magnified, and spatially-resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly-magnified spiral galaxy at z=1.49 behind the Frontier Fields Cluster MACS1149, and provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of the SN and its environment, before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find MgII emission at all positions of SN Refsdal, accompanied by weak FeII* emission at two positions. The measured ratios of [OII] to MgII emission of 10-20 indicate a high degree of ionization with low metallicity. Because the same high degree of ionization is found in all images, and our spatial resolution is too coarse to resolve the region of influence of SN Refsdal, we conclude that this high degree of ionization has been produced by previous SNe or a young and hot stellar population. We find no variability of the [OII] line over a period of 57 days. This suggests that there is no variation in the [OII] luminosity of the SN over this period, or that the SN has a small contribution to the integrated [OII] emission over the scale resolved by our observations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Is it possible to reconstruct an accurate cell lineage using CRISPR recorders?

    Cell lineages provide the framework for understanding how multicellular organisms are built and how cell fates are decided during development. Describing cell lineages in most organisms is challenging, given the number of cells involved; even a fruit fly larva has ~50,000 cells and a small mammal has more than 1 billion cells. Recently, the idea of using CRISPR to induce mutations during development as heritable markers for lineage reconstruction has been proposed and trialled by several groups. While an attractive idea, its practical value depends on the accuracy of the cell lineages that can be generated by this method. Here, we use computer simulations to estimate the performance of this approach under different conditions. Our simulations incorporate empirical data on CRISPR-induced mutation frequencies in Drosophila. We show significant impacts from multiple biological and technical parameters - variable cell division rates, skewed mutational outcomes, target dropouts and different mutation sequencing strategies. Our approach reveals the limitations of recently published CRISPR recorders, and indicates how future implementations can be optimised to produce accurate cell lineages

    CeLaVi: an interactive cell lineage visualization tool

    Recent innovations in genetics and imaging are providing the means to reconstruct cell lineages, either by tracking cell divisions using live microscopy, or by deducing the history of cells using molecular recorders. A cell lineage on its own, however, is simply a description of cell divisions as branching events. A major goal of current research is to integrate this description of cell relationships with information about the spatial distribution and identities of the cells those divisions produce. Visualizing, interpreting and exploring these complex data in an intuitive manner requires the development of new tools. Here we present CeLaVi, a web-based visualization tool that allows users to navigate and interact with a representation of cell lineages, whilst simultaneously visualizing the spatial distribution, identities and properties of cells. CeLaVi's principal functions include the ability to explore and manipulate the cell lineage tree; to visualise the spatial distribution of cell clones at different depths of the tree; to colour cells in the 3D viewer based on lineage relationships; to visualise various cell qualities on the 3D viewer (e.g. gene expression, cell type) and to annotate selected cells/clones. All these capabilities are demonstrated with four different example data sets. CeLaVi is available at http://www.celavi.pro

    La stazione geodetico-geofisica ipogea del Bus de la Genziana - Pian Cansiglio

    Nel novembre del 2005 ha preso via la stazione geofisico-geodetica situata nel Bus de la Genziana sull'altopiano del Cansiglio. La stazione ha lo scopo di monitorare con continuita' l'inclinazione del terreno. Attualmente e' dotata di una coppia di clinometri. Nel presente lavoro viene prima fatto l'inquadramento geologico dell'area nella quale e' situata la stazione, riportando anche le caratteristiche della forta scossa di terremoto del 1936, che e' avvenita ai piedi dell'altopiano del Cansiglio. Successivamente vengono presentate le caratteristiche dei movimenti osservati nel primo anno di vita della stazione: e' stato riscontrato un buon accoppiamento con il terreno, documentato dal buon segnale di marea terrestre osservabile

    Modified Special Relativity on a fluctuating spacetime

    It was recently proposed that deformations of the relativistic symmetry, as those considered in Deformed Special Relativity (DSR), can be seen as the outcome of a measurement theory in the presence of non-negligible (albeit small) quantum gravitational fluctuations [1,2]. In this paper we explicitly consider the case of a spacetime described by a flat metric endowed with stochastic fluctuations and, for a free particle, we show that DSR-like nonlinear relations between the spaces of the measured and classical momenta, can result from the average of the stochastic fluctuations over a scale set be the de Broglie wavelength of the particle. As illustrative examples we consider explicitly the averaging procedure for some simple stochastic processes and discuss the physical implications of our results.Comment: 7 pages, no figure
